The World Book and Copyright Day was celebrated on 23 April 2025. The theme was “The role of Literature in achieving the UN SDGs”. To mark this day, the Open University of Mauritius, through its Library Committee, organised a special event. The highlight of the celebration was the address of the Chief Guest, Dr the Hon Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, PFHEA, Minister Tertiary Education, Science and Research, who elaborated on resource sharing among libraries and the importance of offering services in innovative ways to meet the changing needs of users. He also talked about the contribution of authors in creating knowledge and how, formerly, as Director-General of the Open University, he had set up schemes to encourage writers to publish their work. The Head, Library Services shared her views on how the OU Library is contributing to achieving the UN SDGs 4, 5 and 16.
Dr the Hon Kaviraj Sharma Sukon launched the book of Miss Anoucheka Gangabissoon, an OU ex-student and also offered prizes to winners of the Short Story Writing and Quiz Competitions organised by OU. All writers present for the event were acknowledged and given a token of appreciation by Mrs S L D Gopee, Officer-in-Charge of the Open University.
Other activities were the distribution of bookmarks, a sketch performed by secondary students and their educator, reading of excerpts from books written by their respective authors, book donations and an excerpt of a talk on the judicious way to use AI in Research by visiting Professor Deon Erasmus.
