OU’s Community Engagement Cell

The Community Engagement Cell (CEC) of the Open University of Mauritius is a dedicated team of academics, administrative staff, and students who engage with internal and external stakeholders, and organise several outreach activities to foster educational, socio-economic, environmental, cultural, health, and wellness benefits. While promoting social responsibility, CEC also aims to develop soft skills such as teamwork, public speaking, leadership, and empathy in learners. Some events are integrated into specific curricula to provide professional exposure to students.

Recent initiatives include:

  • World Press Freedom Day – 03 May 2025
    BA (Hons) Communication, Media and Journalism students interacted with reporters in the studios of Défi Media. They had enriching discussions about the impact of AI on journalism.
  • Promoting reading  in Camp Chapelon – 21 April 2025
    Storytelling, PowerPoint presentations, songs, games, and drawing activities were conducted by Library Science students to promote reading at the NGO Mkida. Their  ‘campaign’ was  themed “Reading Can Make You a Superhero.”
  • International Women’s Day – 14 March 2025
    A vibrant  panel discussion with eminent speakers  on  the theme  “Accelerate Action: Let’s Break Stereotypes!”  was moderated by a student.    Hon. Anishta Babooram, Junior Minister  of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, graced the event. She was welcomed by Dr. the Hon. Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research.
  • Christmas Outreach Event – 20 December 2024
    A festive event  organised in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association, U-Link, MKids Association, and Rotary Club of Moka.  Dr. the Hon. Kaviraj Sharma Sukon unveiled the logo of CEC.
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign – 29 November 2024
    A key event to raise awareness about breast cancer with informative talks and screenings at OU, Reduit.

 

Virtual Outreach Platforms:
OU Wellness Baz, CEC’s virtual wing,  fosters  community engagement. OpenBook Café promotes reading and  literary culture.
