INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

The ‘International Literacy Day’ was celebrated on 08 September 2024. To mark this important event, the Open University of Mauritius (OU), through its Library Committee, organised a series of activities on 10 September 2024. Local personalities, OU Learners, Academics, Library Cadres and staff of the Open University met to share ideas and experiences. This year the International Literacy Day 2024 was celebrated under the theme “Promoting Multilingualism in Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace”. To engage learners in this event, OU launched a ‘Creative Writing Competition’, an online ‘Quiz’ and a live ‘Debate Competition’.

The Keynote Speaker, Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Alladin, elaborated on the topic “International Literacy: Policy, Practices and Reflections”, while the Founder Director-General at OU, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon highlighted the transformative power of education. Dr Sukon explained how OU contributes in bringing education to people’s doorsteps and widening access to higher education locally and abroad. He emphasised that individuals should be able to access all possible resources to improve their livelihoods, increase literacy and create a harmonious and peaceful society.
