Celebrating the 125th Birth Anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam

The Open University of Mauritius had the honour of hosting a commemorative event on 18 September 2025 to celebrate the 125th Birth Anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Father of the Nation.
In his speech, the Chief Guest, Dr the Honourable Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, highlighted Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam’s determination and zeal to serve the nation, inspiring all to contribute to the progress of Mauritius.
A short video, “The Life and Achievements of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam,” compiled from archival materials available at the University, offered a unique glimpse into the remarkable journey of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.
A key aspect of the event was the Memorial Lecture titled “Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam: The Revered Father of our Nation, Mauritius” delivered by Professor Emeritus Ved Prakash Torul.
Professor Torul, whose father was a close collaborator and friend of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, shared personal reflections, recounting childhood experiences of welcoming ‘Chacha Ramgoolam’ into his home. He described Sir Seewoosagur as a visionary architect who secured the independence of Mauritius with dignity. Professor Torul underlined the moral and ethical values of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, noting that he systematically designed a meaningful life for the nation and achieved greatness both nationally and internationally through selfless service to humanity. He highlighted that Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam left a powerful legacy, serving as an inspiration and model for future generations to emulate.
The commemorative event also featured a book exhibition showcasing the milestones in the life of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Attendees had the opportunity to explore these materials, gaining a deeper understanding of SSR’s enduring impact on Mauritius and the values he championed.
